Last night in NYC, Dru Hill performed at BB King’s. Sisqo, Jazz, Nokio and Tao hit the stage after an introduction by Free (of 106 and Park fame) and DJ set by Young Hakim. Going right into one of their biggest singles “How Deep is Your Love”, the r&b greats brought the energy. Feeling the love from the room, they gave it right back, as they belted out their timeless slow jams like “Beauty”, “These are the Times”, and “5 Steps”. Each of the members showed appreciation for each others talents and shared the spotlight and lead vocals throughout the evening.
As a brief intermission between sets, Sisqo did what he normally doesn’t do at Dru Hill shows, performed his solo material. Backed by two dancers, he got the audience moving with his high energy set that included “Got to Get It”, “Unleash the Dragon”, his latest single “A-List”, and guest chorus’ from DMX’s “What They Want” and Lil’ Kim’s “How Many Licks”. It really showcased how the Sisqo brand differs from the Dru Hill brand, but at the same time elevates the group as a whole.
As the group re-emerged in full on stage, they asked the audience to pause for a moment of silence in honor of 9/11. Then they each took a turn to do a solo performance. This included Jazz singing a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” where he had a chance to showcase his powerhouse vocals. They finished the show with some more fans favorites including “In My Bed”, “Tell Me” and “We’re Not Making Love No More”, reminding everyone just how timeless of a legacy they’ve built. As an encore, Sisqo performed his biggest hit of all, “Thong Song”, while the rest of the group joined him and grooved on stage. Overall it was another great night for r&b music at BB King’s.
So beautiful. They did the damn thing live. Classic!
