Five-time Grammy Award-winning soul singer, songwriter, and producer Lalah Hathaway has officially released her brand-new single, “47th Street.” The track serves as a deeply personal love letter to the Chicago neighborhood where her family’s rich musical legacy first took root.
“47th Street” paints a vivid sonic portrait of the pavement where Hathaway’s father—the legendary Donny Hathaway—and his family lived. The track opens with vibrant horn sections that emulate the bustling energy of Sunday family dinners, generational musings, and the resilient hopes of Black families navigating the urban landscape.
Adding historical depth to the release, Grammy Award-winning poet J. Ivy opens the song by narrating the story of the Great Migration from the South to Chicago. Ivy’s spoken-word contribution lays the foundation for Hathaway’s tribute, stating: “They headed north down to lay down their root / The train was filled with hope / From the freight cars to the caboose.
“That’s where my father’s family lived,” Hathaway shared regarding the inspiration behind the track. “My grandfather Hosea—we pronounced it Hozee—together with his mom and dad were always welcoming. In my mind, going back to 47th Street regenerated the pulsating urban vibe of my beloved hometown.”
Throughout the song, Hathaway takes listeners on a nostalgic journey through her old stomping grounds. Lyrically, the track nods to her grandfather and father, noting, “If only these streets could talk, That’s where my daddy laid his hat down, Sweet Hosea wore the crown.”
However, the song is also a bittersweet reflection on gentrification and the evolving landscape of her beloved city. Hathaway closes the track with a powerful reminder of an imprint that cannot be erased: “You can occupy these streets, But you can’t evict what lives in me.”A
