Going into my first time of seeing El DeBarge live, I knew all the history, I knew all the controversy, and I knew of his legendary status. To this point I hadn’t seen him live, but I was expecting the veteran to give a solid show and that’s exactly what he did. In front of a packed crowd of his biggest supporters, he took us through some of his biggest hits while with DeBarge, his solo career, and both of his new singles. A highlight of the night was when he called out Doug E. Fresh in what looked to be an impromptu performance. Fresh proceeded to beat box on the mic while El played the piano and rapped before singing “Iggin Me” as the crowd cheered in amazement. At the end of the show, the crowd chanted his name until he came out for an encore and did “I Like It” and “Lay With You” (minus Faith Evans). Overall, the crowd enjoyed El’s “return” to the stage and I was happy with the performance.
