Last week following her performance at the Apple Store here in NYC, I had a chance to do a quick interview with Erin Christine where we talked about the struggles for an upcoming artist like herself, her recent collaboration with Pusha T, her most memorable performance so far, what to expect next from her, and more.

YouKnowIGotSoul: For those who aren’t familiar with you as an artist, can you just introduce yourself?

Erin Christine: Hello everybody this is Erin Christine and I’m a soulful pop singer, I rock on stage, I kinda go psycho with my keys if you just saw the show, and I have a whole band behind my including my DJ and we just rock out in New York City. I appreciate you guys checking me out.

YKIGS: When did you first decide you wanted to do a career in music?

EC: I was three years old. I was watching “The Little Mermaid” with my babysitter and from there I just knew that singing was all I wanted to do.

YKIGS: How are things going with your career so far?

EC: Well it’s going good. We just performed at the Apple Store so I think that’s pretty big for us, we’re very excited about that. I’ve just been working with Tiffany Starr on my album and creating new sounds and we’re very excited to release new music for you guys. So it’s going well.

YKIGS: You’ve got the single “Say” out. Give me some background on that song and how it came together.

EC: Yea the single “Say” is out. Me and Tiffany worked on it in the studio and I kinda just came up with this melody on the piano and she came in the studio doing this dance and she thought it was crazy. She kinda just started throwing out lyrics and that’s how the song evolved. We got the production on it, we got the drums on it, Malay did the production and he’s a very brilliant producer. It’s on iTunes now so we’re very excited. Buy it, it’s 99 cents, iTunes!

YKIGS: You’ve also got a remix to it?

EC: We’ve got the remix also, thank you for mentioning that, it’s with Pusha T who did like the most insane verse ever on it. So check it out, he’s a crazy, super dope artist.

YKIGS: So when can we expect to hear your debut album?

EC: Well we don’t have a release date for that yet. But if you guys follow me on Twitter @ImErinChristine you can stay connected with me and I’ll let you know when the album’s coming out. We do have a song called “Green Lights” coming out in May.

YKIGS: I know you’ve been performing a lot in New York, and I’ve been to a bunch of your performances, but do you have a most memorable performance so far?

EC: I would say this one was honestly pretty memorable to be performing in the Apple Store because not many artists get the chance to do that. I think John Legend and the Roots were one of the first who did it, so it’s pretty cool to be compared to that. Also, I performed weekly at the Bitter End here in New York City this past summer and John Legend actually came to one of my shows, so that one really sticks out in my mind. It was crazy to see one of my inspirations sitting right in front of me.

YKIGS: You mentioned you’re a soul and pop singer and you are very unique compared to what’s out there right now. How do you see yourself fitting in with the current state of the music industry?

EC: I see people needing my kind of music because it’s not something that’s not there right now and I think that’s what the music industry is lacking and what it needs. People need that real, emotional music that they can relate to.

YKIGS: What’s been the biggest struggle in trying to make it as an artist coming up?

EC: Everyday! *Laughs* Everyday trying to make it as an artist. It’s crazy because you have people telling you that you can’t do it and you just have to have your mind right and believe in who you are as an artist and have a great team behind you that pushes for you and fights for you. I can’t say what my biggest struggle is, but I can say that every day is a struggle and it’s worth it.
