After appearing on the first season of R&B Divas, Keke Wyatt certainly got a boost to her music career as fans got a chance to see her loving, quirky personality behind the scenes. She began building on that momentum with her EP “Keke” released last year, and now is working towards a full length album for 2016. The first single “Sexy Song” recently released and is a beautiful showcase of her talents. We should expect more of the same when the album releases early next year. YouKnowIGotSoul sat down with Keke Wyatt during a recent appearance in NYC and discussed the concept behind the new single, what to expect on the new album, R&B Divas, possibly doing a country album, and more.
YouKnowIGotSoul: We’re here in NYC and you just performed some of your new single “Sexy Song” on stage tonight. Tell us about the new song.
Keke Wyatt: The new single is called “Sexy Song”. I’ve had seven children but I have eight children. We can feel sexy too. So I had that in mind and I wrote it alongside this little white boy! He wrote the crap out of that, he helped me write it. The producer for the song was Dominic Gordon. He did about half of my new album that’s coming out soon, around my birthday which is March 10th. I’ll be celebrating my sugar’s first birthday. That’s going to be kinda fun to celebrate all of those things. The funky part is it’s going to be my birthday…I don’t want to be 34 yet! *Laughs* But hey, if I live that long, then God is merciful and great!
YouKnowIGotSoul: The last project we heard from you was the “Keke by Keke Wyatt” EP. What can you tell us about the new album?
Keke Wyatt: I can tell you a little bit or I’ll get in trouble. It’s basically like a relationship. You fight, you break up, then you make up. Then you’ve got 100 kids like I do! It’s pretty much how the album goes.
YouKnowIGotSoul: The last time we spoke with you, it was before you went into R&B Divas. How has that impacted you going into the new project?
Keke Wyatt: I don’t want to talk about R&B Divas. It was a great run. I feel blessed to have done it. I ain’t doing it no more! I’m going to do my own thing. I’m focusing more on my music right now seriously. I had fun, I made friends and lost friends. Whatever. It was cool.
YouKnowIGotSoul: We’re curious how you’ve been able to use R&B Divas as a platform for your career.
Keke Wyatt: I was able to use it somewhat as a platform, but I was making music before it and I’m still making music after it. So it’s just a way for people to see me for who I really am. Although they didn’t portray me right, some of that was me.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Do you think if you had not chosen to do the show it would be any different from where you are at now musically?
Keke Wyatt: No because I’ve got my core fans and they ride and die for me. I’ve sold millions of records before so I’m sure all of my lovely fans will keep that going for me. Now I’ve got new people so that’s cool, I like it.
YouKnowIGotSoul: You’ve become known for your duets with Avant over the years, and there is always the rumored duets album you’ll do with him. However, if you had to do a duets album with another r&b male artist, who would you choose?
Keke Wyatt: I love Joe and I love John Mayer. If I could do a whole entire collab album with John Mayer, I would love to. He’s awesome.
YouKnowIGotSoul: The last EP you had different elements like country and rock. Is that why John Mayer stands out?
Keke Wyatt: Not at all, I just like John Mayer. I don’t listen to him everyday, but if there were a person that I could do that with, it would probably be him. I like all of his music but my favorite music is country music. I’m country all the way, it’s ok. It’s what I was born to be.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Do you think you’d ever consider doing a full country album?
Keke Wyatt: Oh my God, I want to so bad but my husband won’t let me do a whole country album, but that’s ok. I’m just going to choke him in his sleep and then he can’t say anything else! *Laughs* I’m just playing.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Will the new album be more towards traditional r&b sonically?
Keke Wyatt: No, my new album coming is everything like the EP. You are liable to be twisted up like a pretzel. It’s so dope!
YouKnowIGotSoul: Any collaborations on the new album?
Keke Wyatt: Yea, there is nobody on the new album. It’s the way I chose to do it because I’ve learned that when you go on the road and when you’re singing and don’t have the other artist there it’s kinda difficult to perform your songs like you want them performed. I love Avant, that’s my brother, but it’s kinda hard performing when he’s not there, those particular songs. I can still do my show but this time I didn’t want any of those because I prefer to perform with the people that are on the record. They have their own careers and I have mine. It clashes sometimes.
YouKnowIGotSoul: You showcase your beautiful vocals here tonight. You’ve become one of the most underrated vocalists in r&b. How does it make you feel?
Keke Wyatt: That’s so sweet, but it’s only for a small time. Everybody has their time, and it’s God’s time. I’m waiting on him. He has preserved me, he has made me better, I’m just waiting on him. I’m not underrated at all, I’m just not elevated to where he wants me yet. But I’m on my way. All it is is stairs you have to climb, and I’m over halfway now. It aint too much before I’ll be on top, but I’ll be on top for him.
YouKnowIGotSoul: Anything you’d like to add?
Keke Wyatt: I would like to add that I love my fans very much and thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be Keke Wyatt today. Thank you so much and I love you so much. Please continue to support me, becuase I love it!
Hey Keke, you are glowing girl. Did I mention I looovee your new song.
KeKe always cracks me up! And I agree with John ^^^, her new single’s so dope!
I think she should drop a country EP. I wish “Lie Under You” had been sent to country radio.
