When Erykah Badu introduced the Soul Cypher at the 2015 Soul Train Awards, it was a bit of a revolutionary moment. Sure, hip-hop had become known for their cyphers over the years, but we really hadn’t seen one on live tv for r&b. That changed when the eclectic group of Chrisette Michele, Eddie LeVert, Lalah Hathaway, and K-Ci teamed up for a performance.
This year, Erykah Badu brought it back one more. The Soul Cypher included an even more diverse group including Ne-Yo, Tyrese, Gladys Knight, Angie Stone, and Robert Glasper. Each of the participants sang some of their original material while being backed by the beat from Bryson Tiller’s hit “Don’t”.
